Below are some still-life shots I styled with Malcolm Menzies recently. They showcase new trend colour palettes for SS 2012 released in late 2011 by Mix magazine. Mix is a brilliant trend forecasting magazine published by Global Color on a quarterly basis. All leading retailers and fashion houses lead by these trends so it's great as a Stylist to access these ahead of time.

Decorating tip: My local hardware store made the emulsion paints up to the colour reference codes provided in the magazine so I could achieve the exact colour representation.

They have clearly nailed the brand with their successful little team, which is why Toast haven't strayed in a year. The look they so magically create is relaxed, informal, achievable, attainable AND aspirational. The key ingredient to a successful lifestyle brand.

Mega Knit throw

I love looking at colour bright accessories and interiors in the grey months of our English winter. It not only lifts my mood but brings a sense of anticipatory excitement for the release of new Spring product in the months ahead.

Hay, by Scholten & Baijings, do contemporary brights, just right. Here's a selection from Hay's lookbook this year - most of the below selected products are available from UK stockist, SCP East in Shoreditch.

The graphic edge of these designs are commercially sweetened by the soft pastel shades. Although, for those more daring, there's super bright options too. I think my favourites would be the Colour block bedlinen in red and the Mega Knit throw.

The above collection, was a collaboration with the dutch pair Scholten & Baijings and Hay. A collection composed of carpets, bed linens and tea towels and revealed at maison et objet 2011. I can't wait to see what they showcase next year... this reminds me, I need to book my trains/badge if I'm going to fit in a non-stop day trip on 21st Jan!

Having seen the forecasted colour trends for Spring/Summer 2012 in Mix magazine this year, I can safely predict the Fluorescent products will be a hot pick.

Hello friends.

It seems to be taking much longer than anticipated to show you my gorgeously transformed pumpkins, promised earlier this month! They are coming soon, in the form of beautiful animated Gifs. Myself and co-worker, Malcolm Menzies have been trialling new ways to style/shoot animated images for the evolving technological world we live in! Apple apps is the place to be apparently. As soon as they are complete I shall post them up for you to see :)

In the meantime I wanted to share a few of the best in festive stationery currently hitting our concrete, and abstract (online) high streets.

Papermash is always a favourite of mine (although I did get a job-lot of charity ones this year from paperchase!) - especially this clever and truly stand-out stunning card with 3D pop out winter wonderland!

I love these nostalgic ones too....

Urban Outfitters has a few winners: The limited edition Rob Ryan number is positively electric...
And it would just be cruel of me not to tell you about Christmas at the The Original Pop-up Shop, what with their cuter than cute paper bags with doilies and handmade crochet decorations... Historically the shop is a family run ice-cream parlour, but for 6 weeks of the year it opens as a Christmas Pop-Up Shop. If you're unable to visit (unfortunately I fall into this category) I recommend you visit online! Enjoy x

Love at first sight...

Discovering a new designer, product, magazine, artwork that you just fall in love with immediately can't simply be a coincidence. I was quite obviously meant to stumble upon Anthology. A fall I did. I couldn't be more smitten with my just-this-minute-purchased UK subscription, due to arrive safely on my doorstep in two long weeks.

Here is a snippet of the current issue and a little sample of my new love... organically grown from a little cafe in San Francisco by two clearly talented creatives ~ Anh-Minh & Meg. I thank you.

Another goal for the life-list, I must design, launch and edit my very own lifestyle title before I'm 50.

[LOVE] Ceila Birtwell's new book

So this year's London Design Festival has been and gone again, and my promise to visit more events and installations this year goes with it. They really need to post listings months before to ensure I get diary space to visit them all - I blame the organisers.... because it's easier. My difficultly is that I get immersed in projects and can't then see the value of taking time out to absorb yet more inspiration. Sometimes I feel as though I'm full to the brim and couldn't possibly take in any more, but maybe I just need to learn to be a better multi-tasker. I hear myself calling...'Muuuuum!'.

Margo Selby

I was thrilled to meet Margo after featuring her hot-off-the-press and gorgeously graphic Iceni silk cushion (above) in a shoot last month. Hosted by Crafted, a mentoring programme passionate about connecting the skills of those who have built successful businesses with those who have the potential to do so, a seminar slot at Decorex introduced 12 carefully selected candidates who have since reached personal success. Margo is one of these extremely talented and entrepreneurial creatives.

I loved listening to the journey she and her crafty team undertook to develop a stronger, yet equally intricate, weave especially for her new upholstering fabric collection.

Not forgetting Nicky Haslam's incredible under the sea themed installation at the main entrance of Decorex - here are some photos borrowed from his blog...

New friends

Although I did come across Baileys website quite some time ago, somehow my memory of it got buried and I forgot about my promise to visit. It wasn't until I happened upon their stand at 100% Design show, Earls Court, this week - most definitely worth a visit to see some of the most innovative and trend setting designers there are in Britain, and internationally - where I met Sally Bailey and her husband Mark. Their stand stood out like a sore thumb with it's rusty and almost grubby looking recycled goods, compared to the super-slick and the contemporary high gloss finishes of surrounding stands.

I love that their fondness of old treasures and battered belongings has a sense of forgiveness and truth to it unlike other vintage collectors I've seen. Not only do they make a living from restoring and reselling old furniture and interesting objects, which there seems to be a growing marketplace for, it is what they love and are visibly passionate about. Like ducks to water - this industry was made for the Baileys.

The stripped back, unfinished, unpainted, look is what Sally and Mark refer to as 'undecoration' - a term they have coined to describe their passion for recycling, and their rather unhealthy relationship with paint stripper. Their home, like a much-loved teddybear, has worn edges and pulls in the stitching. And they wouldn't have it any other way. "We understand that people might not get it," says Sally, "but it's what we like."

Well, thanks to the clever minds over at Jonathon Adler you can now design your own cushion covers, rugs, throws and totes from a huge range of gorgeous patterns and colours. It's so much fun and really easy to use! I actually thought there was perhaps too much choice - it took me ages to decide on sharing this little trio...

If it weren't for the unaffordable designer price tag, fit for Gwyneth Paltrow and the like, I would kit my flat out immediately. Well at least it's provided me with some harmless fun for half an hour - now back to work! humph.

Summer brights

It seems a bit old news to write about summer seeing as we should be well on to Autumn/Winter trends now (or Christmas for us Stylists!) - but I can't help recognising these punchy summer colours Leslie Shewring has styled. As always her work is the look of military coordination...

I hereby salute you Leslie, as the queen of colour palettes, moodboards and cute DIY details!

To me this fusion of aquamarines and citrus tones conjures up thoughts of fresh mint mojitos... or perhaps a fresh mint tea seeing as it is only lunchtime!

I think this colour palette would be most suited to a conservatory space or compact/balcony garden - with painted pots and garden furniture in limes, blues and yellows, and cushions or seat pads in ikat patterns.

Wet weather play

Last week I spent the most indulgent afternoon, swooning over the newest and trendiest treasures on display at Few & Far - Brompton Road's answer to boutique homewares. Although it was an afternoon awash with soggy pumps, forgotten umbrellas and frizzy hair, it was a welcome delight to duck into this gorgeous shop for 10minutes.

The current window designs are just incredible and filled with bucket loads of real sand...!!

Pretty in painterly

It was when I recently visited the Anthropologie Autumn/Winter 2011 press show that I started to notice the emerging trend of painterly designs on cushions and ceramics. The visible brushstrokes display such a brilliant sense of artistic creativity and texture, which can look stunning in any interior be it traditional or modern. The more vibrant and abstract the design, the more fitting it will be to a modern interior. Simple floral designs however can look just perfect in a traditional or period interior.

This week I'm in love with Christian Lacroix's new fabric collection featured in this month's House & Garden magazine. The image below illustrates the stunning 'Vuelta' panel, from Lacroix's first collection of fabrics and accessories for Designer's Guild, inspired by flowers being thrown at toreros after bullfights in Southern France.

John Makepeace

On my way to collect some splashback wall tiles from the Strand on Friday I decided to go for the cultural cut through Somerset House. I can't quite decide whether I prefer the house in the summer on the terrace, or as the magical Christmassy backdrop for the annual Tiffany sponsored ice skating. Either way it's possibly my favourite building in London and definitely on my dream wedding venue wish list!

It was by undertaking this sneaky route that I came across John Makepeace's current exhibition, marking the celebration of 50 years at the forefront of British furniture design. Definitely worth the extra time elapsed from my lunch hour, I gazed wondrously at the incredible collection. The nature inspired knotted chair and willowy backed chairs were my favourite, but I also loved the geometric lines of the carved cabinets.

When asked about his identifiable style Makepeace says,

"I am frequently asked where my inspiration comes from. Although each commission is different, nature is a constant factor. I am inspired by the way natural evolution resolves problems with results that are invariably elegant and enduring."

"My designs are rooted in a long-standing fascination with our physical and psychological needs, the properties of different timbers and the way technology and individual craftsmanship enable new possibilities."

Until 17th July you can view the wonderful works of John Makepeace in the Terrance Rooms at Somerset House - try to if you can plan to visit on a Wednesday you also have the chance to hear John talking about his collection at 1pm every Wednesday for the duration of the exhibition.

Ralph Lauren Home - New Collection

My lovely friend, and PR Manager for Ralph Lauren Home, kindly invited me to join the exciting unveiling of the new collection, California Romantic, this week.

Unbeknown to me, each season the basement showroom of their New Bond Street flagship store goes under dramatic transformation to showcase new collections - from wall panels to plaster finishes, everything gets ripped out and refitted out for the new collection. One might say this is quite an extravagant demonstration of retail merchandising, although for the leading American lifestyle brand it is a necessary expense. I had the exclusive pleasure of a sneak preview 3 weeks ago, when Charlotte and I caught up for an early breakfast at very chic Cecconis... wallpaper drops were partially hung, plaster work under construction, abundant piles of new product overflowing onto newly fitted carpets... it was AMAZING!

This collection is all about creating a beautiful and romantic space with African inspired texture, leather hides, and natural materials - both through the linens and the woven details in the home accessories. Apparently starting out as a strong African theme, the collection was softened and feminised quickly with the change to a Californian setting. Immediately the collection was transformed to possess that very commercial and aspirational, All-American Ralph Lauren look.

New decorating concept at ANTHROPOLOGIE

In a very exciting press release today it was revealed that in just over two weeks, Anthropologie is set to launch a new decorator's concept at twelve existing stores across UK and the US. This includes our very own designer district King's Road store. With a wide array of decorating product on offer and expert assistance, I'm sure it will be beyond busy in no time.

To launch the workshop-style concept in London on 27th March Emily Chalmers, author of Modern Vintage Style and owner of hip Shoreditch boutique Caravan, will be offering one-on-one personal design consultations with customers. Jemma Ooi and Nathan Philpott, founders of Custhom, also advocating the concept will be on hand to demonstrate their screen printing techniques on postcards, and allowing customers to take home a handmade sample.

I hope this is the first of many workshop sessions they propose to run for interior enthusiasts far and wide. Well done Anthropologie - I look forward to attending the launch!

Spring paint collections

Finally I can share my shoot images with you!!!

I can honestly say I have never planned more! Surrounded in press loans for about two weeks before the shoot day and until a week and a half afterwards... oh to have an assistant. Sketching began shortly after my inspirational blog post, and finished shortly before we started shooting. For me, coming from a writing background where drafts after drafts are the only way to get anything right, I see my sketch book as a culmination of ideas... with the last few becoming the real article.

With very special thanks to Malcolm Menzies who photographed the shoot and completely saw and captured my vision, I give you our Spring paint collections.

With the idea of showcasing different paint groups, I developed situations which took paint as a decorating medium out of context, to add interest and intrigue.

Mud, stone & slate...

...Once the hearty ingredients to an early settlement building circa 7500 BC; now the gorgeous earthy palette found in trendy contemporary interiors.

Ever since the nudes and warm flesh tones hit the fashion highstreet I've been waiting with keen anticipation for its appearance in the interior world. Ali Allen and Rachel Christensen are two featured Stylists who perfectly capture this on trend palette. Using soft, smooth shapes reminiscent of flow-like earthy channels with geometric shapes, they create a truly natural yet strongly engaging composition.

Assisting for Rachel, amongst other great stylists in London's hub of creativity, provided me with a solid base with which to pursue my own creativity. Celebrating this nature inspired colour trend, here is a lovely interior shot featuring lots of stone and earthy green tones.

I love Christmas decorating. It's such a lovely feeling to welcome friends and family guests into your cosy Christmas home... warm candlelight and twinkling tree lights, hot mulled wine, and beautiful decorations.

A Christmas wreath is always the first thing my guests see, and is one of my favourite early purchases. This year I'm decorating with warm berry reds and antique silver tones, as I love the clean Scandinavian look, so a berry wreath and garlands are on my list. Having just had a quick peak at the Martha Stewart 'holiday' pages, I do love these alternative looks...

Interview corner: Little Paris

Last month I had the pleasure of styling Little Paris in Crouch End. An idyllic Parisian boutique filled with vintage trinkets and market treasures.

Hélène Allen opened the shop in December 2009 with the vision to collect and showcase antiques and beautiful French pieces from her homeland. Her dream of opening her own shop started early and while working for the manager of the Homewares department in Galeries Lafayette in Paris, she began to see a way to make her dream a reality. Little Paris is now well established on Park Road, Crouch End, with a stream of regular customers who come to see the new pieces Hélène sources from the flea markets and antique fairs in and around Paris.

HOW DID LITTLE PARIS COME ABOUT?
I would say that a big driving force was the fact that I wanted to bring elements of everything I love from France to England, which is now my home. With Little Paris I have enjoyed creating a space, which is inviting, unique to London and homely. I think it embodies the spirit of the France I know and love. I can say that I am now living my dream, a dream I’ve planned for a long time.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE AND WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
I would definitely describe my style as quirky and eclectic. Much of my inspiration comes from my childhood memories of great places filled with atmosphere and a feeling of a lot of joy. Many of these memories have been in places where the objects and furniture play host to the atmosphere, live and breathe; and have a soul of their own which I find comforting.

YOUR STORE IS A WONDERFUL MIX OF FURNITURE FROM DIFFERENT PERIODS - WHERE DO YOU GO TO COLLECT AND BUY THESE FINDS?
Well all my pieces are sourced from markets around France, particular those in and around Paris. Over the years I have built relationships with dealers that I know and trust. It’s always a thrill to find something wonderful to bring back to my store in London. I would really encourage people to go to their local flea markets. You’ll be amazed at what you can find. It’s a lot of fun bargaining, hunting for objects and finding unique pieces for your home.

WOULD YOU SAY THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MARKETS HERE IN ENGLAND VS THOSE IN FRANCE?
No I would say markets themselves are all similar but the products available in France can be quite different. Have a look at the website, www.parispuces.com, which can give an insight to the French Flea Markets. Just remember that no matter where you are the best way to find those treasures is to wake up really early, enjoy a 3am extra strong espresso and start on the excursion.

DO YOU RESTORE ANY OF THE PIECES YOU FIND?
Yes we often have to restore furniture. Some of this work I do myself but mostly I use a team in France who I advise for restorations.

WHERE ARE YOU ABLE TO DELIVER?
For the moment, with my lovely van I can deliver around Crouch End for free and deliveries elsewhere around London are made for a small fee.

WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR STYLING A HOME WITH FINDS FROM MARKETS?
I like the fact that not everything has to be used in the way that it was originally intended. It’s fun to think about how you can use something in a new and different way. For example, the cash desk in my store is a former 1920’s tribunal desk where jurors used to pass sentences. Or my 1940’s tri postal letter sorter is now being used as a desk for my Mac.

Another great idea is to combine the old and new, one style with another. There are many possibilities, for instance you could use lots of pieces from my store to create ‘industrial chic’ by combining Tolix chairs with an original wooden farm table and a kilim rug for example.

I hope I've kept you in much anticipation for what was the certainly the best Decorex show I have ever been to!!

Andrew Martin stole the show again for me with the most creatively daring stand, complete with a 20ft tall, trojan elephant. Nelly (the elephant) towered over their stand making quite a dark and dramatic space, the perfect backdrop for their collections of vintage and theatrical pieces.

I managed to sneakily (against protocol) take a few photos...

Hermes and Harlequin Tabletop collaborated to create a true Alice in Wonderland experience - awkwardly asymmetrical and muddled in a dimly lit canvas burrow! It was a fantastically dreamlike space filled with treasures displayed on delicate twig and moss covered creations. Lit in golden uplighters, I felt compelled to hover and absorb as much quirky creativity as possible before stepping back onto the perfecly perpendicular walkways of the standardised exhibition hall. A dull realisation in comparison.

I'm big on texture at the moment - fur, cut leather, embellishments, hammered surfaces, worn looking layers - here are a few pieces that stood out to me as individual artworks that could work in almost any interior style...

With Decorex only moments away, this year I have managed to organise myself (and my diary) around the seminars I'd like to see. Martyn Lawrence-Bullard is on my list, as the multiple award-winning Los Angeles based interior designer who is renowned for his wealth of styles, and international clients. Eclectic and trend led yet always sophisticated and elegant, Martyn has a true eye for detail and quality that has elevated him to celebrity status in the interior design world. I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say about current design trends, and see his new coffee table book he'll be signing after the seminar!

Nina Campbell and Andrew Martin are next on my list as top priorities - they both always make such an effort with their exhibition space. I'm particularly excited about the fantastical Sloane Square lobby Nina has created in her interpretation of Alice in Wonderland...**

Scanning the internet for inspiration to report on sometimes gets me nowhere. Often, working in the interior/event design industry I'm thrust into various trends which seem to orbit around me trying to envelop me. Despite variety, trends, styles of design, which is essential and key to my occupation and something I passionately follow - I could quite simply live for eternity in a home completely decked out in Zara Home. It looks so comfortable, simple, attainable yet desirable and composed in a sort of eclectic fashion. Although it's an utterly commercial style, it make you feel individual and stylish - their designers must be geniuses!

I'd love to hear what your favourite high street interiors shop is? Do you share my love of the muddled, washed out palette of cream, white, mushroom and grey?

I came across creative genius Lo Bjurulf courtesy of Lobster and Swan, a blog I follow, this week. Bjurulf, a Swedish interiors stylist, takes a colour palette and really works it. I particularly like the Ikea shoots she's done through creative agency Agent Bauer.

I love this stunning palette of creams, whites, and biscuit tones - totally captivating and delicately dreamlike. It reminds me of the nude concept space in Selfridges this month, showcasing various homeware and dinnerware ranges on raw timber trestle tables and wooden palettes.

Recently I spent an entire Saturday with friend and lifestyle photographer, Corin Brown, shooting some of Grace & Tailor's eclectic market finds. With my departure looming I wanted to make use of these stunning props and capture their beauty in a fresh yet casual style. There are a series of summer living stories we re-created in the refreshingly 'rough-around-the-edges' Morden Hall Park. It would be great to hear what you think of when you look at them...??

I wanted to evoke a sense of English summer afternoon activities. Although spot the lack of Pimms, instead I went for the inspired choice of vintage branded cider found down the booze aisle in Sainsburys. It's deliciously dry and thirst quenching, with a beautiful bottle to boot!

Hampton Court Flower Show

With my move from Grace & Tailor to By Appointment Only Design, where I will be providing a bespoke wedding consultancy service to brides and engaged couples, knowing about seasonal flora, shapes, colours and scents will be imperative for me. Last week I managed to get out of the busy studio for a lovely afternoon at Hampton Court Flower Show, with my green-fingered mum!

It started out as a rather stressful journey, battling against the flow of busy flower goers trying to exit the show at 3pm with carts of plants and garden treats. Once inside, the first and most important stop had to be the ice-cream van: 2 Soleros please! One Solero down and I was now ready to be wowed, inspired and impressed by the biggest and best blooms our nation has to offer.

Vintage design and styling was everywhere... from the quirky re-use of furniture used to create versatile and sustainable stands to vintage jelly moulds filled with citronella scented candle wax. Not to mention the vintage tent which was filled with small decorated areas designed by different nurseries and boutiques. These were incredible, individual works of art with many of them based around traditional childhood narratives including Alice in Wonderland, and historical figures. Hopefully you can see from these pictures how mesmerising these were... I love the moss teapot and cactus garden chair!

If you didn't make it this year, it's definitely one to put in your diary for next year... I think I'll go on Sunday next time, which is the final day of the show, to take full advantage of the final knockdown prices!

I clocked Alphabet Bags on Decor8 today and instantly had to share them with you. How brilliant are these screen printed bags, and for a steal at only £10! They're the perfect summer sling over for Saturday morning strolls at your favourite market or to carry your sun creme and magazine to the park. I love the SWAG bag.

The monochrome alphabet purses are cute too.

Don't you just love that cool fresh air smell wafting through your windows as you spring clean? I can't get enough of it. I've just arrived home after a hard run in the late afternoon sunshine (thank goodness for the drinking water fountains in my local park!) to be welcomed by the sweet aroma of my stewing rhubarb - delicious! I can't wait to smother a bowlful in natural yoghurt this evening, while watching my new guilty pleasure - Mad Men. For those of you that haven't started watching it yet, it's not too late to rite it off. Get on Amazon and order Series 1, you won't regret it I promise.

Columbia Road

This Sunday was a truly delightful one. It was spent pottering around Columbia Road flower market in East London, tucking into fresh mint tea from an Italian kiosk and sharing a posh hot dog, as a quick fix for our elevenses. Pork and herb sausage cut in half smothered in caramelized onions, mustard and a sprig of rocket, sandwiched in a floury ciabatta bun - it was divine!

Having spent a beautiful morning, meandering down Columbia Road in a slowly flowing river of market goers, we decided to make a quick bargain as the stalls were starting to close - I'd read that morning it was better to wait for the last hour when prices are slashed considerably - and walked away with two big bouquets of blooming hyacinth stalks for £4.

After the market we headed down to Spitalfields where we laid out in the sun with girl friends and caught up on friendly gossip. I hope you all had an equally fab sunny Sunday.

Catalogue comfort

There's something so comfortable about browsing through catalogues with a mug of tea, isn't there. I remember as a young girl going through the family Next catalogue and La Redoute, picking out outfits I liked and critiquing my big sister's choices!

The Heads of State

I've fallen head over heals for these limited edition and hot off the press screenprints by The Heads of State. With geometric pattern and bright coloured graphic artwork in high demand this season, these are the ultimate accessory to any plainly decorated wall.
These three are definitely my favourite of the bunch. The three to six serigraph posters are in a run of 100 making them limited edition... so snap one up quick!

For once I think my boyfriend, Ben, a graphic designer by day, will approve of my decision to bring these travel posters into our home - you should have seen his face when I brought home two vintage patchwork cushions. A picture!

I recently discovered these quirky little stools and immediately feel in love with their earnest nostalgia and inventive design. Ingrid Jansen started in 2008 by taking a little old wooden stool and giving it a lovingly crocheted seat cover, now she's featured on every important blog and regularly makes her stamp in the press with her must-have accessories. Right on trend with the thrifty crocheted look, which has taken London by storm, these Dutch hand-made heirlooms are selling like hotcakes.

I think these custom crocheted keepers could be described as 'trendy urban meets handmade country', as they would look positively adorable in any interior! The perfect accessory to a colourful child's bedroom or a cute living space...

Spectacular spirals

Spirograph rears it's retro head once again, bridging the gap between interiors and fashion. Decade after decade it never fails to create such wonderment amongst not just children, but design-appreciating adults too. I've been admiring it's recent development across various mediums of communication and feel the time has come to recognise it as a true art form, step back and enjoy it's beauty.

Appreciated for it's simple symmetrical beauty in a contemporary interior.

Quirky fashion designs featuring the famous interlocking shapes. Matthew Williamson's roll neck maxi dress is just draw-dropping isn't it...?! Closely seconded by the strapless cocktail number, also Matthew Williamson.

Gloria from Gloria Wong Design was the creative genius behind the following Spirograph styled party featured on Design Sponge recently.

Gloria has some truly unique talent, and from spending some time looking at her Wedding design website you'll surely agree. From a fashion design background there is sharp eye for detail and earnest love of individuality. I must say though, the weddings Gloria has designed are somewhat budget-less and overstated affairs, yet always considered and nothing short of stunning.

I'm looking to bring a bit of this spherical action into my home, any ideas of where I can buy a screen print with resembling features would be much appreciated?

Do It Yourself ~ Cushion covers

Having spent a fortune getting my vintage Singer sewing machine repaired I thought I ought to use it, so last weekend I spent an afternoon making two new scatter cushions. Cream with a wide red check and mother of pearl buttons, I'm thoroughly pleased with them. I replaced my old cushion covers with the two new ones and have managed to transform my living room in an instant. The best bit was it only cost me a sewing machine service as I was given fabric remnants from my mother, an ex-interior designer and self confessed horder of fabric. They fit in perfectly with my Scandinavian colour palette, and of course they look so much better because I actually made them!

Comfortably gorgeous cushions by Pale & Interesting

I opted for the zip-free cushion with a button close instead, having been told many times by various handy friends that zips are best avoided. Here's the step by step method I took in case I have convinced you to have a go...

1/ Firstly ensure you have the necessary equipment:
a working machine
fabric scissors
tape measure
pins
thread to match your fabric
fabric
buttons

2/ To make a 40cm x 40cm cushion cover measure and cut 3 pieces of fabric (one for the front and two for the envelope back) 1 piece at 42cm x 42cm, and 2 pieces at 42cm x 30cm

3/ Iron the pieces of fabric, then take one of the smaller pieces and fold over 6cm of the long side and pin 3cm in from the edge

4/ Sew a straight line along this pinned side about 0.5cm from the edge. Make sure you sew backwards for 1cm either end of this sewn edge to secure the thread

5/ Pin all three pieces together inside out (about 3cm from the edge) so the right side of the fabric is facing inwards and the neat, sewn edge of the envelope piece is the correct way round

6/ Sew all the way around the cushion about 1cm from the edge, removing pins as you go

7/ Turn the stitched cover the right way round, and stitch a button on the under piece of the envelope back

8/ Make a small vertical incision, which in length should be the diameter of the button and hand sew around the raw edges to stop the fabric fraying

9/ Insert your 45cm x 45cm feather cushion pad and button up your cover... ta da!!!

In Living etc this month I came across this uber cool property designed and owned by creative furniture designer Jimmie Karlsson, and his partner Rick Shultz in trendy north London. Like stepping into a cutting-edge Shoredtich gallery I felt immediately inspired by their effective use of writing and graffiti which seemed to complete the overall design perfectly. With a monochrome base palette they have cleverly contrasted bright, bold accents to brighten the space and give it artistic character. Although the styling is a little masculine for me I felt the need to share their creative talent with you.

A recent trend that has grown on me considerably since thumbing through this feature is the idea of a blackboard wall. Particularly in kitchen's or near the front door, I think they have everlasting practical use. Whether you need to jot down a 'note to self' or you fancy listing out your dinner party menu for your inquisitive guests, it serves a great purpose. Far from that stage myself but a worthy tip nonetheless, what about children's times tables or spellings...! Having them written by the door or in the kitchen would surely help the little ones remember those real toughies.

Wishful thinking

With my lavender coloured hyacinth in full bloom I can't help but wish for the colours and scents of Spring. Although we don't have our own garden we do have a healthy sized tiled patio which is great for decorating with pretty terracotta pots filled with garden herbs and flowers. Currently I'm going through a phase of loving fresh mint tea and literally can't seem to grow it quick enough. Coriander is another favourite of mine in Vietnamese pho soup and Spanish quesadillas.

US Country Living stylist Hester Page has really encapsulated what I'm longing for in what seems a rather long awaited Spring, what with all our snowy winter blues. I hope these delightful photos help you get through these long dark days and look forward to a brighter Spring ahead.

Is it just me or is the worst part of everyone's day the first 5 minutes of every morning when you contemplate what would happen if you 'snoozed' your alarm one more time... or indeed did not turn up for work? Would they even notice your absence? For that split second every morning I deliberate these very questions and I think my eiderdown has something to do with it. I'm not sure whether it's the extra weight of it resting gently on top of my duvet, or the heat it so readily provides that I enjoy most - either way I'm thoroughly thankful of it this winter.

I came across Pale & Interesting a while ago but I must admit forgot to broadcast such findings. Since my New Year's resolution is to act on the present rather than make a note only to forget about it later. I must say this feels rather good... I do hope I can sustain this good beginning.

Pale & Interesting is the creation of husband and wife team, Atlanta Bartlett and Dave Coote. Having each successfully worked in the magazine, photography and design industries for the last 20 years you can only imagine their collective talent. The prolific producers of interior design bibles, furniture, products and magazine features - this is their new baby, born of their shared passions and beliefs.

What's great is their philosophy to mix it all up. Timely and in-vogue they are set to soar. Collecting old with new, contrasting rough with smooth and teaming femininity with utility. And the best bit is... it's so easy to achieve in your home. An exclusive find at a local antique fairs and a few handcrafted accessories and you're pretty there.

I could tell almost immediately on browsing the online collections at Pale & Interesting that Atlanta had to be of good Styling breed, and low and behold I was correct. The Simple Life

This morning my heart literally skipped a beat when I turned the page of my latest issue of Selvedge to discover a one of a kind property and creative haven which I must share. It was only yesterday I was thinking 'where could I find a hand crafted knitted tea cosie for my beautiful mint green dotty teapot...?' then I found Laura Long. Laura is such a talented young designer with a simple love of traditional crafts and vintage treasures. Handmade with care and great consideration, Laura's products have a real nostalgia about them. I love the layout of her website and they way in which she displays her girly gifts, using a polaroid illustration and eclectic typewriter font to label them.

Not just a great designer, Laura shares her talent for knitting with others, at her London studio or in the comfort of your own home! I keep meaning to book a refresher knitting course but I am yet to find a partner in crime...

Wedding bliss

Since I started working for a styling company who, amongst other things, design and style weddings I have a new found respect for exquisitely designed weddings. It's really no mean feat to stop from falling into the huge abyss of wedding design and end up with a 'like the other 8 you've been to this year' wedding. To truly make a wedding have that wow factor takes time and patience. It is one thing to have your ideas mapped out and even tear sheets from your favourite bridal magazines to back them up but quite another to source each individual piece and create the exact look and feel you've always dreamed of.

This evening I met with a bride who wants to create a magical white wedding with a vintage twist and I immediately knew where to go for inspiration. Once Wed is a favourite website of mine, I often take 5 minutes out to lose myself in the dreamy photography and beautiful styling. It seems to captivate the most beautiful and delicate of weddings with each one telling a different story about the couple and what marriage means to them. With times being a little harder recently why not save some money and get a bit creative with your wedding. Make it personal and take your wedding ceremony outside to your favourite scenic backdrop. By hanging a few old jam jars glistening with tea lights from surrounding trees and making rows of vintage school chairs you've already created the perfect, most romantic setting to declare your love to your soul mate. Why do beautiful English roses (the female, not the flower...) always find themselves queuing up to book the most extravagant of venues with the biggest price tags... I think it's time we take a look at these beautifully delicate and romantic US weddings and get creative and personal with our own.

This image just goes to show how one stunning antique piece dressed with beautiful blooms can surprisingly and easily, complete a space. Less is so much more in this case.

These luggage labels take minutes to make but will stay in your guests memory for years. Used to dress the ceremony in this instance but could just as easily be displayed at the entrance to your seated reception instead of the usual table plan with your guests name on one side of the tag and their table number on the other.

For those of you that live in London, you can find old biscuit tins like this one at Spitalfields market on a Thursday.

Clearly guaranteed to stay dry... this open outdoor setting definitely has the wow factor. The icing on the cake would have to be the fairy lights, which, festooned across the space look beautiful and create the perfect ambiance ready to dance the night away.

This luscious green and white wedding is also stunning and probably more achieve for the British bride, with more than plenty woodlands waiting to welcome your special day.

The rays of sun look as though they are making the delicate origami birds glow as they pass through the gaps in the wooded canopy.

Andrew Martin

Well Decorex has been and gone again which to me is always a sign that Autumn is upon us. It always seems to creep up on me as I try to ignore the changing temperature and continue to wear jackets which are far too unsuitable for our late September days. It's now time for chunky knits and winter coats, oh what I'd do for an open fireplace in my little north London apartment... one can but dream!

Back to the reason I am blogging today - Decorex. Yet again I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The different ways in which designers express their creativity never fails to inspire me. I must say though I did find myself drawn to the more classic styles and fabrics I became fond of during a week of shooting new collections with House & Garden (out this issue). I love Colefax's Greta in raspberry and cream and GP&J Baker's Mereworth in aqua - two very classic English designs suited to charming country living styles.

I particularly enjoyed Andrew Martin's stand with it's retro chic theme. Their pop art scatter cushions and restored vintage furniture was stunning, accompanied by glimmering chrome stage lights it created a fun yet sophisticated living space which really worked.

Although cameras are strictly prohibited at Decorex I have found some images from Andrew Martin's website which demonstrate the fun, fresh ways in which they displayed their new fabric collections.

How dreamy are these Lombok bedrooms! I have picked 4 favourites to share with you...

delightful distress

The distressed look is the in trend option out of the four and probably my pick of the bunch. The empty picture frames and asymmetrical styling works magically with its neutral distressed backdrop. The only real option furniture wise is untreated wood. Be careful not to overdo the look by adding distressed white furniture into the mix.

french fancy

I am loving the stylist's work in this one. The hat box, pile of classic novels and quilted eiderdown give this modern, angular four-poster majestic grandeur.

oriental paradise

When I look at this I hear trickling waterfalls and tropical bird noises, which is naturally dreamy. This monochrome look is organically complimented by the surrounding foliage. A truly memorizing experience.

vintage twist

Ornamental four-posters like this one are a child hood dream of mine... to own a four-poster bed, to have my own vegetable patch and potting shed, and to have an in and an out drive... the older I become the more distant these dreams become. For example, the in and out drive is no longer on my list, more a Victorian town house in leafy north London, which incidentally is still a very distant dream more so in terms of finances... In terms of the styling of this room, I love the vintage inspired voile canopy and antique accessories.

I'm not sure what it is about them but I just love them. Could it be their strong weighty appearance, the smooth lines of the outer casing or the heavy click as you monotonously press and release each key...? Not only are they fun to write with, they bring a sense of character and mystified drama to your home when displayed with other eclectic vintage treasures. A pretty duck egg blue typewriter (like the one below) is on my shopping list..!

I couldn't resist sharing my love of piled logs... they seem to be everywhere at the moment. They look just perfect stacked ironically in a disused fireplace or stacked under benches like the second picture. This outside in look lends itself to the white canvassed Nordic style I love. It also brings a certain organic warmth that can compliment just about any interior style.

I love the idea of mixing framed art with vintage plates, it really gives the room a sense of character. It also allows you, the decorator, to be a bit more creative with your otherwise often plain walls. I'm not sure whether I prefer the symmetry of the pastel pink wall or the more haphazard look of the other two...

On rainy days (like today) one of the things that keeps me smiling is the idea that one day I will own a green house like this one. Spending many sunny afternoons outside, on my knees with mud under my fingernails. Coming from a family of keen gardeners and vegetable growers it seems its in my blood. For now I will continue to indulge in the idea of one day owning my very own potting shed and greenhouse...

I love this Scandinavian style, especially this pale grey kitchen with porcelain farmhouse sink. I'm usually one for zero clutter and prefer things encased in beautiful furniture in the kitchen, distressed armoires are a favourite of mine, however the simple lines of the shelves in this Nordic kitchen look just stunning and with the pale palette and bright light don't look cluttered at all.
